This old heraldic cross design was brought to what is now known as North America and Canada by the Jesuits from about the 17 century to today. The intention was to give them to the Indians as they taught them about the true God.
This cross measures 1-1/2 inches long by just over 3/4 inch wide. They come in sterling silver or bronze.
The fur traders discovered that the Indians took great pride in wearing them, not necessarily because of their religious ties. The fur traders recognized their value in trading beaver pelts with the Indians, and soon after the Hudson’s Bay Trading Post began to have the French Lorraine crosses made by locals for trade. Beaver fur was highly sought after in Europe for making hats for the gentry. Many today categorize this as trade silver. There are many iterations over the centuries of the cross' depiction.
