The DANDRIDGE 18th century reproduction shoe buckles are exact reproductions from an original pair that I own and were given to me at one of my first visits to the Fort Frederick Market Fair in Big Pool, Maryland (it takes place the last weekend in April every year) by William Hettinger, III.
They are solid cast, silver-plated over pewter that won't bend or break. They go very well with either the antiqued silver or silver Marquis knee buckles that I have in another listing.
I do have some silver recently in that slightly imperfect as the crystals were set a bit off but still wearable, and thus the reduced price.
You will receive a pair (two). They are made with glass rhinestones, and measure 2-5/8 inches long by 1-5/8 inches wide. They will accommodate a buckle strap that is up to 1-5/16 inches wide. They are easily attached and removed to accommodate shoes made by all different makers.
The Ladies shoes shown are American Duchess "Frasier" in the black. The men's shoes are Townsends (www.townsends.com). I also have a video on how to attach your show buckles on YouTube - https://www.kwaltersatthesignofthegrayhorse.com/2023/02/18th-century-shoe-buckle-history-and.html
They can also be worn on a hat or as a sash buckle if so desired.
Inspiration portraits are:
- Maria Walpole, Duchess of Gloucester by Nathaniel Dance Holland dated 1766-1769 Shoe Detail
- Captain (later Admiral) Sir Hyde Parker by George Romney at Melford Hall
- 1781, The Sailor's Pleasure at The British Museum
- The last photo is of the original pair. Amazing detail on these reproductions.
