This is a very beautiful and simply elegant puzzle ring. It is an inspired reproduction of one that Alexander Hamilton and his wife, Elizabeth, wore. The original is now in the Rare Book & Manuscript Library at Columbia University in New York City. Theirs were intertwined and connected with a small pin on one band, and it went into the hole of the other to keep them together. Their ring was also much flatter so when put together it looked like it was one band, and engraved with their names (last photo). Mine is the same, but you can see the twist better in the center.
These are offered in a gold-filled band. Your purchase is for one (1) ring unless you purchase more. I can have these made custom for those interested in another size or metal.
The two gold wavy and twisted hoops fit together to form a finger ring called a puzzle ring. Gimmel rings, also called joint rings, were commonly used in the 16th, 17th, and 18th century to signify a betrothal, marriage, or a friendship.
The last photo is of the original rings taken by Dianne Durante. Her blog is https://diannedurantewriter.com/archives/2024
