This necklace won the 2018 Early American Life Directory of Traditional American Crafts and is made after the original owned by Martha Washington (last photo) - and I must say it is stunning!
My reproductions measure the same as Martha's - this necklace is 16 inches long. The rosette top is 3/4 inch round. They truly are just lovely! I may also be able to make a bracelet or earrings as Krista is wearing in the first photo if interested. Please inquire for price and availability. Otherwise, I have another listing for exact reproductions of Martha's garnet earring set which essentially is three pair of earrings - a rose top and two styles of drops that come on or off.
Per the Martha Washington website, "This garnet necklace dates to the beginning of Martha’s marriage to George Washington. It was probably part of a shipment of jewelry from London that arrived in 1759. Garnets were common among the jewelry Martha purchased in the 1750s and 1760s, as they were one of the most fashionable of gemstones at the time (image in the last photo is courtesy of Mount Vernon Ladies' Association)."
So I have done my best to recreate this necklace as close to the original as I can as an inspired reproduction piece. The back of the original is exactly the same as the front, but my reproduction is not.
The originals were made from beautiful round and oval cut garnets in a gold washed silver setting (vermeil).
